Roof Replacement in Birmingham, AL Old roof off. New roof on tight.
A full tear-off and a new shingle roof for Birmingham-area homes, starting with a free estimate.
Roof Replacement · Birmingham, AL
A new roof starts with taking the old one off.
A roof replacement is a tear-off, not a cover-up.
We strip the old shingles down to the wood deck so we can see what the last roof was hiding.
Soft or rotted decking gets cut out and replaced before anything new goes down.
Then the roof goes back together in order: drip edge, underlayment, flashing, shingles, ridge.
Victor and Josue run the jobs, and reviewers mention them by name. You get an estimate first, and it is free.
Mosqueda Construction has been in business in the Birmingham area since 2007.

Our workWhat the job includes
Six things every roof replacement gets.
Tear-off to the deck
Every old layer comes off so the new roof sits on solid, inspected wood.
Decking repair
Soft, rotted or delaminated sheets of decking are cut out and replaced with new wood.
Drip edge and underlayment
Metal drip edge goes on the eaves first, then underlayment covers the whole deck.
Flashing and pipe boots
Flashing goes in at walls, chimneys and valleys, with new boots on the plumbing vents.
Shingles and ridge
Starter course at the edges, shingles nailed in straight courses, then ridge cap along the top.
Clean-up
Old shingles get hauled off, and we run a magnet over the yard and driveway for nails.

What to look for
When a roof is ready to go
- Shingle edges are curling or the tabs are cracked.
- Bare, dark patches where the granules have worn off.
- Granules piling up in the gutters or at the downspouts.
- Shingles missing or lifted in more than one place.
- Water stains on a ceiling or dark spots on attic decking.
Shingles, and what goes under them
Most homes here get architectural asphalt shingles, which are thicker than flat three-tab shingles.
Under them, synthetic underlayment resists tearing better than the felt paper older roofs used.
Valleys and the areas around pipes and chimneys can get a self-adhered membrane for extra cover.
A ridge vent paired with open soffit vents lets attic heat and moisture out.
Color is your call, and it helps to look at samples against your brick and trim in daylight.
Around Birmingham
Roofs here take rain, heat and hail.
Central Alabama gets heavy rain all year, so valleys and flashing carry a lot of water.
Spring and late fall bring hail and straight-line wind that lift shingle edges and knock off granules.
Pines and oaks drop needles and leaves that hold moisture on the roof and pack the valleys.
Older homes in the first Birmingham suburbs can have board decking and layered-over shingles.
Look and measure
We come out, get on the roof, measure it, and give you a free estimate.
Pick materials and a date
You choose the shingle and color, and we set a start date around the weather.
Tear off and rebuild
Old roof off, decking repaired, then drip edge, underlayment, flashing, shingles and ridge.
Clean up and walk it
We haul the debris, sweep the yard for nails, and walk around the house with you.

Often done together
How long does a roof replacement take?
It depends on the size of the roof, how steep it is, and how many layers come off.
Weather and any decking repair we find can add time.
We go over what to expect when we give you the estimate.
Can you put new shingles over the old ones?
We tear off instead. A layover hides bad decking and old flashing, and it adds weight to the framing.
Stripping to the deck is the only way to see what is under there.
What happens if you find rotted decking?
Rotted decking cannot hold a nail, so it has to come out.
We cut back to solid wood and put down new decking before the underlayment goes on.
Do I need to be home while you work?
No, as long as we can get to the driveway and all sides of the house.
It is loud inside during tear-off, so plan around that if you work from home.
Move cars out of the garage and driveway before we start.
