Vestavia Hills, Jefferson County

Half the homes date from 1950 to 1979.

Vestavia Hills is about 9 minutes from downtown Birmingham by way of US 31.

US 31 is Montgomery Highway here, and I-459 and I-65 also cross the city limits.

The city sits at the top of Shades Mountain, nearly all of it inside Jefferson County.

Home building started in 1946, the city incorporated in 1950, and about 38,600 people live here now.

Census figures show about half of the housing went up between 1950 and 1979.

Nearly eight in ten homes are owner-occupied, and about 72 percent are detached houses.

Neighborhoods

From Cahaba Heights to Liberty Park.

  • Cahaba Heights
  • Liberty Park
  • Rocky Ridge
  • Tanglewood

The old core along US 31 is mid-century, with ranches, split-levels and traditional brick homes.

Ranch roofs are often low in pitch, so they drain slowly and depend on sound flashing.

Those streets are lined with mature trees, which means shade, leaves and the odd fallen limb.

Sloped lots and steep driveways are common, and many homes have a daylight basement.

Liberty Park, east of the main city, is the newer end, and building there is still going on.
