Deck Building in Birmingham, AL Framed solid. Flashed at the wall.
New decks and deck repairs on pressure-treated framing, with the ledger flashed at the house.
Deck Building · Birmingham, AL
A deck is only as good as where it meets the house.
A deck is a structure first and a place to sit second.
Most of what keeps it sound is underneath, in the footings, posts, beams and joists.
We frame in pressure-treated lumber and set the posts on concrete footings.
Where the deck meets the house, the ledger board is bolted to the framing and flashed above.
That joint is where water gets behind a deck and rots both the deck and the wall.
We also repair existing decks, from swapping soft boards to rebuilding stairs and railings.

Our workWhat the job includes
What a deck job includes.
Footings and posts
Concrete footings are dug and poured, and posts are set on them to carry the beams.
Pressure-treated framing
Beams and joists are pressure-treated lumber, hung with metal hangers and structural fasteners.
Ledger and flashing
The ledger is fastened to the house framing with flashing over it to turn water out.
Decking boards
Boards go down with even gaps so rain drains through and the wood can dry.
Railings and stairs
Rail posts are fastened to the frame, and stairs are cut with even rises and solid treads.
Repairs and board swaps
Soft boards, loose rails and worn stair treads are replaced on a frame that is still sound.

Our workWhat to look for
Signs a deck needs attention
- Boards are soft, split or cupped enough to hold water.
- The railing moves when you lean on it.
- A gap has opened between the deck and the house.
- Posts are soft or dark where they meet the ground.
- Nails or screws have backed up out of the boards.
Lumber, railings and layout
Pressure-treated pine is the standard framing lumber here, and it works for the deck boards too.
Treated wood needs to dry out before it takes stain or sealer well.
Railings can be all wood or wood posts with metal balusters between them.
Stairs can come off the side or the end, depending on the yard and where you walk.
A deck close to the ground needs room for air under it so the framing can dry.
Around Birmingham
Humid air is hard on wood.
Heat, humidity and year-round rain around Birmingham are hard on deck boards and stair treads.
Leaves and pine needles pack the gaps between boards and keep the wood wet underneath.
Brick-and-siding houses are common here, and a ledger is handled differently on brick than on siding.
On an older deck, the frame is often still sound when the boards and rails are worn.
Visit and measure
We look at the yard and the house wall, measure, and give you a free estimate.
Settle the plan
We agree on size, height, stairs, railing style and the decking material.
Frame and deck it
Footings and posts go in, then ledger, beams and joists, then boards, rails and stairs.
Final walk-around
We clean up the cut-offs and fasteners and walk the deck and stairs with you.

Can you repair my deck instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the posts, beams and joists are sound, new boards, rails and stairs can go on that frame.
If the frame is rotted or the ledger is loose, rebuilding is the better call.
Why does the ledger board matter so much?
It carries the house side of the deck.
It has to be fastened into the house framing and flashed so water cannot sit behind it.
How long does it take to build a deck?
It depends on the size, the height off the ground, and how many stairs and rails there are.
Rain and the time concrete footings need to set also affect the schedule.
When can a new deck be stained?
Pressure-treated lumber is wet when it is new and needs time to dry out first.
How long depends on the weather and how much sun the deck gets.
