Alabaster, Shelby County

Three homes in ten date from the 1990s.

Alabaster is a Shelby County city of about 33,900 people.

It is about 30 minutes from downtown Birmingham, down I-65 and then US 31.

US 31 runs through the city, and Highway 119 is Montevallo Road.

It began in the early 1920s as housing for workers at the Alabaster Lime Company.

The city incorporated in 1953 and merged in 1971 with Siluria, a cotton mill village on Buck Creek.

The median home dates from 1994, and Census figures show the 1990s as the busiest building decade.

Owners live in about 87 percent of the homes, and about 86 percent are detached houses.

Nearly half of the housing in Alabaster went up during the 1980s and 1990s.

Houses that age tend to need a roof, windows and gutters within a few years of each other.

Siluria is the old end of town, a mill village whose houses were sold to the workers in 1965.

The city lies mostly in two valleys drained by small creeks, so we watch where downspouts send water.

Some subdivisions were still being built in the 2010s, so plenty of roofs here are young.
