Birmingham, Jefferson County
Most homes here were built before 1980.
Birmingham is the largest city we serve, with about 198,000 people.
It sits in Jones Valley, with Red Mountain rising immediately south of downtown.
Nearly all of it is in Jefferson County, with a small annexed part in Shelby County.
I-65, I-20, I-59 and I-459 all run inside the city, and so do US 11, US 31, US 78 and US 280.
US 31 and US 280 run together south of downtown as the Red Mountain Expressway.
Census figures put the median home at 1965, and about 18 percent of housing predates 1940.
Fewer than half of homes are owner-occupied, and about 58 percent are detached houses.

Highland Park dates from 1884, and Forest Park and Norwood followed in the early 1900s.
Tudor, Queen Anne and Craftsman houses from those years tend to have steep, cut-up roofs.
On a roof like that, the valleys, dormers and chimney flashing usually give out first.
The Southside streets climb the slopes of Red Mountain, so runoff moves fast and gutters matter.
About a third of the housing is from the 1950s and 1960s, the age when windows and siding wear out.
